Upgrading Microsoft Office remains a daunting task, especially for firms still using Office 2003. Driven by looming end of support for Office 2003, desktop refreshes to upgrade to Windows 7, and the need for compatibility with third-party collaborators and partners, many enterprises that extended the life of their Office investment now face the challenge of bringing their workforce into the world of the Fluent UI without causing business disruption. And the pitfalls they face can also impede successful transitions from Office 2007 to 2010 as well as moves to non-Microsoft productivity tools. The recipe for a successful Office upgrade includes a heavy amount of planning, a bunch of input from the business, a package of training, and just the right amount of remediation to minimize risk.

September 2010 Business Process HRM Solutions: Traditional Models Clash With Next Generation Processes And Technology Paul Hamerman, Claire Schooley Justify and quickly deploy the right solutions for financial, customer-facing, HR, and other business processes Research Alert icon   RSS icon
Human resource management (HRM) applications – consisting of 6 categories of solutions ranging from core transactions to strategic talent management – is a market in transition. In this $8.7 billion software market, talent management stands out as the fastest growing solution segment, and SaaS revenues are increasing rapidly as on-premise licenses stagnate. Traditional core HRMS solutions represent half of the overall market, but the breadth of HRM processes challenges even the largest – SAP and Oracle – to be a one-stop shop. Yet blending multiple HRM solutions present architectural and integration challenges that impact costs of ownership. Business process professionals should innovate their HRM processes and ownership models to leverage SaaS, social and mobile technology to optimize the value of the organization’s most important asset – people.

September 2010 null All Forms Are Not Created Equal Sheri McLeish Research Alert icon   RSS icon
In 2006 Forrester identified Adobe and IBM as the clear market leaders in e-forms. At the time e-forms emerged as the critical component to replace paper, leading to the digital forms of today that live at the intersection of data, content, and process. In the past few years, activities in the market have led to consolidation as well as transformation, as e-forms today are more aggressively being integrated with content management and business process solutions to support activities such as customer communications and web self-service. As use of e-forms in the enterprise continues to grow to support both internal and external information collection, Content & Collaboration professionals must understand the competing standards and strategies of Adobe, IBM and Microsoft, as well as new Cloud entrants and specialty vertical packages, to make the right choices for different data collection needs.

September 2010 Vendor Strategy Which Verticals Are Most Attractive For ICT Vendors? Andrew Bartels Leverage shifts in buying behavior Energy & Utilities, Financial Services, Government, High-Tech, Manufacturing, Media & Entertainment, Professional Services, Retail Research Alert icon   RSS icon
Information and communications technology (ICT) vendors are increasingly focusing their solutions design and go-to-market strategies on vertical industries. This trend will only accelerate with the advent of Smart Computing, which will drive even greater demand for vertically specialized systems. But which industries are the best ones for a vendor strategist to target? Two characteristics define the best target industries: 1) the size of tech spending and 2) asset intensiveness because the economics of asset-intensive industries make them most receptive to Smart Computing solutions. In this report, we conclude that the government, financial services, and transportation industries in the US have the most attractive combinations of asset-intensity and size, making them the most attractive targets for vendors’ vertical strategies. Asset intensity is the most important characteristic because the industries that are most dependent on structures, equipment and software, and human capital will be most likely to increase their overall ICT spend to adopt Smart Computing offerings. This data provides a basis for better decision-making and industry targeting by strategists at ICT suppliers.

September 2010 Vendor Strategy The Age of Computing Diversity Frank Gillett Anticipate technology (r)evolutions, Create an innovative portfolio of offerings High-Tech Research Alert icon   RSS icon
The computing industry is exiting an era built mostly on general-purpose, good enough central processing units (CPUs), servers, systems designs, software, Web apps, and client devices. These technologies and associated supplier business strategies will soldier on, but vendor strategists need to check their road maps against a new set of technology and business strategies to reach some of the most appealing and profitable market opportunities. Specialized hardware components, optimized server systems and software, hardware appliances, and client-device-specific apps are being used successfully in major markets such as smartphones, analytics, vertical apps, high-performance computing (HPC), and even PCs. Vendor strategists need to design for customer success — and their own — by choosing carefully among traditional industry rules and the new approaches of the age of computing diversity.

September 2010 Business Process Social Network Analysis: Improving Customer Service Through Powerful Predictive Tools James Kobielus Optimize the business by bringing insights and predictive analytics to business processes Research Alert icon   RSS icon
Social networks such as Twitter and Facebook are a potential goldmine of insights on what is truly going through customers’ minds. Social networks are literally the “buzz” that can spell the difference between success and failure in a reputation-driven online economy. Everybody wants to know whether, how, how often, and by whom they’re being mentioned on Twitter, Facebook, blogs, and the like. Even more critically, everybody wants to influence those discussions in their favor and harvest maximum revenue potential. In this document, Forrester Petouhoff will help business process professionals identify potential applications of social network analysis in customer service, sales, and marketing. Forrester will highlight applications drawn from real-world case studies among leading-edge companies. This session will elaborate on the following statements: Social networks are becoming integral to business processes, especially those such as sales, marketing, and customer service that depend on multichannel engagement with customers and other external parties. Social network analysis allows companies to mine social networks for real-time customer and market intelligence that can spell the difference between success and failure for new products and other make-or-break initiatives. Enterprises can implement social network analysis both with existing and new predictive analytics and data mining tools, developing inline predictive models that can be integrated directly into business process platforms.

Prospective buyers of Unified Communications (UC) systems are becoming more aware of the potential benefits, but UC trial and deployment activity remains stagnant. Many buyers are waiting for interoperability — or at least a credible promise of future interoperability — to reduce the financial and technical risks they undertake when deploying Unified Communications systems. Like Vladimir and Estragon in Samuel Beckett’s Waiting For Godot, they are not sure exactly what they are waiting for, but they continue to wait nonetheless. Vendors will accelerate the UC market by selling systems based on open standards like SIP, SOAP, and SIMPLE to a combination of IT, business management, and financial buyers. Systems OEMs need the cooperation of channel partners, particularly those that offer a range of UC management capabilities, from simple on-site management to cloud-based UC solutions.

You must empower employees to solve the problems of empowered customers.” We believe so passionately that this is true – and we know it’s happening – that we’ve written a book called Empowered about it. Employee HEROes – highly empowered and resourceful operatives – are harnessing groundswell technologies that they master first at home to solve customer and business problems. In fact, more than one in three employees is doing so today. IT can continue to be the department of no and try in vain to shut down social, mobile, video, and cloud technology use. Or it can step up to its rightful place as the organization’s technology advisor to drive and support groundswell technology adoption. This report will outline the ideas in the book Empowered and give each member of the IT organization a clear vision on how to empower employees to solve customer problems: Find a HERO, help a HERO, and be a HERO.

Business buying behaviors have changed, and while the capabilities of the Marketing Automation Platform vendors have kept pace, most marketing organizations have not advanced beyond initial stages of maturity. B2B marketers must start using technology to align their communications with the buying cycles of their prospects, or they’ll fall further behind competitors and see their sales pipelines deteriorate.

October 2010 Infrastructure & Operations Q&A: Networking Landscape, Q3 2010 Andre Kindness Transform the desktop experience to empower your users Research Alert icon   RSS icon
Landing on the moon or the Jonas Brother’s debut doesn’t hold a candle to the awesome factor in with today’s networking landscape. Customer’s couldn’t be in a better position to have true networking choices with Hewlett-Packard’s acquisition of 3Com, Brocade waking up with ONE, and Juniper’s entry into the high-end switch market have the potential to challenge Cisco’s dominance. Meanwhile, Cisco has left the gate with their Nexus and UCS solutions. Regardless of the platform, we believe Ethernet is the future of all data center networking but infinaband, fibre-channel (FC) will be around for long time so solutions will need to bridge the gap. Infrastructure managers should: 1) leave behind the traditional three-tiered data center and move toward the promised land of a two-tiered LAN architecture; 2) make the change to a converged Ethernet slowly with FCoE and avoid major overhauls until SANs are phased out in 10 years; and 3) save money on data center networking by looking at all vendors and being open to a multivendor network.

The history of the information technology (IT) industry is written in terms of products, usually characterized as successive generation of hardware devices enabled by advances in semiconductor technology. However, although based on the same facts, the history of the business technology (BT) industry is written differently, focusing instead on the outcomes enabled by business innovations exploiting technology. Product-based, IT history celebrates engineering feats in vendor labs that, while impressive, only indirectly create customer value. Outcome-based, BT history celebrates the collective IT and business efforts of customer enterprises as they -- and their vendor partners -- transform product investments into business outcomes that directly create business value. While product trends will remain important, vendors that wish to lead the BT industry into the future must aggressively transition product-based market engagement models to outcome-based market engagement models, led by the three legs of engagement: BT marketing, BT sales, and BT service.

From their origins as "PCs with the display cut off", x86 servers have undergone a steady evolution in capabilities and performance, driven by a combination of semiconductor technology and system architecture. Change over the last several years has been significant, with the introduction of not only faster, but increasingly virtualized servers with improved power efficiency. Despite this recent acceleration in capabilities, the next several years promise an equally compelling set of innovations in virtualized I/O, packaging, and even delivery models, with significant new options in integrated solutions for deployment of large virtualized infrastructure projects. Infrastructure architects must begin to plan for an increased level of virtualization of server elements and a change in management models in exchange for more efficient operations. The good news for users is that the market will remain intensely competitive, with none of the major suppliers having the capability to enforce any price discipline. Users with large procurements will have a relative edge in vendor negations.

As technology spending gradually recovers and "as-a-service" delivery models take hold in the market, the question being debated in the industry becomes: is it back to business as usual or will the "pay per use" pricing and dramatically more standardized service offerings change how vendors' make money? As end-user organizations shift their spending from products to "as a service" offerings, scale and cash flow become king and the one-off, hyper-customized solutions go the way of the Edsel. In parallel, the reliance on growth from emerging economies will put pressure on pricing and margins. Forrester asserts that these changes will dramatically impact the financials and dynamics of the information technology business over the next 5+ years. Business Process (BP) professionals implement data warehousing (DW) appliances to deliver more powerful analytics more rapidly, inexpensively, and pervasively. Unfortunately, some BP pros push back because they doubt these preconfigured solutions can offer significant short-term IT operational cost savings compared to a traditional “roll your own” approach. Likewise, some BP pros and application development and delivery professionals remain unaware that DW appliances can provide a flexible infrastructure for business intelligence (BI), advanced analytics, and data integration. For these reasons, BP pros must develop a strong business case for DW appliances that not only defines compelling business drivers and opportunities—current and future--but also clearly quantifies the costs, benefits, and risks for deriving the ROI. A Total Economic Impact™ (TEI) analysis of a typical first-phase DW consolidation project identifies strong returns in hard dollars over the first 1-2 years as well as flexibility advantages going forward.

This TEI will help BP&A professionals to develop a strong business case that not only defines compelling business drivers and opportunities but that also clearly outlines the quantifiable costs, benefits, and risks to measure the anticipated ROI on DW appliances.

October 2010 Business Process Use Mobile Apps To Empower Business Processes Paul Hamerman Justify and quickly deploy the right solutions for financial, customer-facing, HR, and other business processes Research Alert icon   RSS icon
Mobile applications for business use are receiving a great deal of attention from package application software vendors and considerable interest from business process professionals. Besides e-mail and customer-facing mobile solutions, business use remains low – use cases are limited primarily to field-based sales and service processes and the applications are often custom-built to a single device platform. The opportunity to deploy mobile applications for enterprise business processes will change dramatically within the next 2 to 3 years. Rapidly evolving mobile technology, creating a frenzy of consumer adoption, will migrate to business use quickly, but challenges remain for buyers. As vendors ramp-up the supply of commercial-grade mobile application packages to extend business processes and integrate with corporate ERP and CRM solutions, customers will not automatically get on board. Value scenarios, pricing, distribution, and technology stability must settle before large scale adoption occurs. Business process professionals and their IT colleagues need to consider what types of mobile apps can deliver business value to their organizations and what is necessary to make the technology work effectively.

Other drivers pushing case management to the forefront include: 1) a stronger focus on customer service during the recession 2) an increased need to manage the costs and risk of servicing requests for loans, claims, and benefits; 3) a growing need to respond to inconsistent "incidents" that do not follow a well defined script; and 4) greater pressure on government agencies to respond to citizens, and (5) increased use of collaboration, e.g. SharePoint for process improvement. BPM and ECM suites alone is not sufficient for case management, but the intersection of BPM and ECM, plus greater analytics and event processing will breathe new life into case management. The Forrester wave will review the leaders in case management.
